FX’s ‘The New York Times Presents’ documentary anthology strand returns on August 19 with a new feature doc focused on COVID-19 misinformation, Superspreader, that will premiere simultaneously on FX and Hulu.
Directed and produced by Lora Moftah, the film focuses on Dr. Joseph Mercola (pictured), a Florida osteopathic physician who has been criticized and subjected to regulatory actions for promoting unproven or unapproved treatments. He’s recently been accused of spreading coronavirus misinformation online as part of his efforts to build his business by pushing natural health cures and disseminating anti-vaccination content.
The documentary is the latest project from Moftah, a producer on previous ‘New York Times Presents’ films The Killing of Breonna Taylor, To Live and Die in Alabama, Who Gets to Be an Influencer? and They Get Brave. She was also a producer on the FX and Hulu docuseries The Weekly.
Superspreader is executive produced by Ken Druckerman, Banks Tarver, Mary Robertson, Jason Stallman, Sam Dolnick, Stephanie Preiss and Esther Dere, with Dere also serving as showrunner for ‘The New York Times Presents.’ Liz Day is supervising producer, and Rachel Abrams is senior producer.
