BBC Studios has created a pair of new executive roles in North America, the company announced on Tuesday (August 2), tapping Janet Brown and Tara Maitra for the positions.

Brown (pictured, left) joins the company as president of content distribution for North America and Latin America, while Maitra (pictured, right) has been promoted to chief commercial officer of global distribution. Both will be based in New York and report to CEO of global distribution Rebecca Glashow.

“Janet is a proven dealmaker across content distribution spanning all formats and genres, and I’m thrilled to be adding her to our team. North America and LatAm are very strong, growing markets for BBC Studios, and we have only begun to tap into our potential,” Glashow said in a news release.

“She joins a group of exceptionally talented executives, including Tara, whose new responsibilities reflect the growing global demand for our content, and the broad array of new opportunities and partnerships we continue to explore around the world.”

Arriving from independent entertainment studio Gunpowder & Sky, in her new role Brown will set a strategic direction for BBC Studios’ continued growth in North America and Latin America. She will also lead the company’s global distribution relationships with top partners in the U.S., including networks and streaming platforms, and develop new business solutions for growth.

Brown joined Gunpowder & Sky in 2016, where she worked as EVP of global distribution and commercial operations. In that capacity, she negotiated the sale of Cinetic Rights Management/FilmBuff; led sales, marketing and distribution on original, coproduced and acquired titles; and oversaw the growth and expansion of the company’s consumer-facing brands, such as Dust and Alter. Prior to her time at Gunpowder & Sky, Brown served as CEO of FilmBuff.

Maitra, meanwhile, arrived at BBC Studios in January 2021 as chief commercial officer of BBC Studios – Americas. In her new role, she will oversee global syndication and advertising sales, including BBC Studios’ digital news properties and the World News TV channel. This marks the first time that BBC Studios has consolidated these duties under one leader.

Prior to joining BBC Studios, Maitra was chief revenue officer at the data exchange platform BDEX, and worked for more than a decade at TiVo on content strategy, media insights and data solutions. She has also held executive roles at NBC, Comcast and Primedia.
