The MIP List is a curated list of new shows that are hitting the global market at MIPTV this year. Check out what’s making waves, and why they’re sked-worthy. MIPTV runs from April 8 to 10 in Cannes, France.
This spring, Paris-based Federation Studios brings exciting new documentaries to MIPTV. The independent TV and film studio builds on the strengths of its existing catalogue, from original portraits of celebrities to groundbreaking true-crime series and science or history prime-time films. With the launch of its brand new line-up, Federation will be looking for pre-buys and acquisition deals during MIPDOC and MIPTV.
This year, Federation will see one of its docuseries in competition at Canneseries: Dale: Undercover. Produced by What’s Up Films (Netflix’s The Staircase, Trial 4), this 4 x 35′ series tells the incredible yet true story of Dale – pastor, police officer and undercover cop in DC during the ’90s, with unprecedented access to surveillance footage from the Washington PD and the FBI.
Dale: Undercover is only one example of the box-set series Federation is bringing to Cannes. This series is tailored for successive weekly programming and also performs strongly on VOD platforms. Federation’s rich lineup also features high-profile event films such as The Last Secrets of Humankind or The Kersten Case, alongside innovative portraits of contemporary, sport or historical figures in a way that was never addressed before, like Muammar Gaddafi or Giroud.
Muammar Gaddafi: Inside the Dictator’s Mind
This 1 x 90′ program, also planned as a 52′ international version, delves into the psyche of the Libyan tyrant, using a psychological profile drawn by the CIA and exclusive access to people closest to Gaddafi. Produced by Amandine Chambelland, a former producer from CAPA who won the Albert-Londres Prize for her film Wagner: Putin’s Shadow Army.
The Kersten Case: Himmler’s Enigmatic Doctor
This 2 x 52’/90′ documentary produced by KMBO tells the little-known story of Dr. Felix Kersten, Himmler’s physical therapist, who was the only person able to relieve him from his chronic back pain. Using his close rapport with the chief of the SS, he managed to save tens of thousands of prisoners from concentration camps. But nowadays, his legacy is questioned by historians.
Locked Up: Inside Coercive Control
This 4 x 52′ mini-series produced by Lapinxa (a Federation Studios company) for CANAL+ presents one of the most fascinating stories of control and influence of all time. For ten years, Thierry Tilly convinced eleven members of a family to remain secluded in their house while he stole all of their money and drove them to a place of irrationality and horror.
The Last Secrets of Humankind
Narrated by Kit Harrington, this $6 million prime time docu-fiction goes back to the origins of humankind in Asia. Fully reenacted, the 1 x 90′ or 2 x 45′ program comes with a 52′ science-of which looks at the science behind the film, the making of the state-of-the-art CGI and the harrowing work achieved by famous director Jacques Malaterre (A Species Odyssey) and his cast of amazing actors.
Giroud
Produced by Federation Studios and Les Bons Clients for CANAL+, this intimate portrait of the French soccer team’s top goalscorer of all time is not just another sports doc.
