Divining the Global Model

America's Next Top Model
April 1, 2006

America’s Next Top Model
Broadcaster: UPN
Producer: 10 by 10 Entertainment/Bankable Productions
Host: Tyra Banks
Last full series aired: 5 (premiered Sept. 21, 2005)
Ratings: Series 5 (12 eps) averaged 5.2 million viewers/ep
Series 6 premiere: March 8, 2006
Core audience demo: women 18 to 34
Slot: Wednesday, 8 p.m. (with two-hour premiere)
Localized flare: A catwalk queen herself, Banks created America’s Next Top Model, which premiered in May 2003. The granddaddy of the Next Top Model format, this version has done for the word ‘fierce’ what The Apprentice has done for ‘You’re fired.’ Its recent sixth series premiere was its strongest premiere ever in adults 18 to 34, women 18 to 34, adults 18 to 49, women 18 to 49 and total viewers (5.3 million).

Australia’s Next Top Model
Broadcaster: FOX8
Producer: Granada Productions
Host: Erika Heynatz, international catwalk and TV campaign model with reality TV presenter experience
Last full series aired: 1 (premiered Jan. 4, 2005)
Series 2 premiere: Jan. 4, 2006
Core audience demo: 16 to 39
Slot: Wed. 8:30 p.m. (series 1 aired Tues. at 8:30 p.m.)
Localized flare: The format is similar to that of the us original: the ladies are primped and preened into model shape with critiques by the host and three permanent judges, as well as roving guest judges, including a hairstylist and performing arts trainer (although the girls are already fully capable of acting like divas). There are also weekly challenges, and each episode someone gets the boot.
Intel: FOX8 channel manager Duane Hatherly says the net skews fairly evenly male/female. ‘With partner programs such as Miss Match and Tru Calling, we have been able to schedule strong young, female-skewed nights and offer our viewers an appealing alternative to the older-skewed programming on other broadcasters.’

Germany’s Next Top Model
Broadcaster: ProSieben
Producer: Tresor TV
Host: Heidi Klum, the supermodel who reportedly had her legs insured for over US$2 million. Klum also hosts Magical Elves’ Project Runway
Series 1 premiere: Jan. 25, 2006 (10 eps)
Ratings: the first four episodes ranged between 2.46 million and 2.76 million viewers
Audience demo: women 14 to 29; out of this demo, the biggest group has an average monthly household income of more than €1,750 ($2,100), a secondary education and/or university degree, and consists of executives, managers and self-employed people
Slot: Wednesday, 8:15 p.m. (with a few two-hour eps)
Localized flare: Rather than simply meditating cat fights, host Klum shares several of her own modeling experiences in interview scenes throughout the show. Also, in nowhere but Germany will you see hopefuls work a catwalk in a coal mine – a workplace important to the country’s history.
Intel: Christian Asanger, ProSieben’s head of show, entertainment, says Wednesday is Womens’ Night on ProSieben. Model is an alternative to sports for female viewers on what is traditionally Germany’s football night.
