Canada to broadcast Al Jazeera English

The Al Jazeera English network may soon hit Canadian televisions when the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission delivers its decision regarding the network on November 26. The Toronto-based Ethnic Channels Group Ltd. has agreed to act as sponsor and comments the Commission has received have been mostly positive. This is counter to the 2003 attempt to carry Al Jazeera Arabic, which never found any carriers.

The Al Jazeera English network will be available on Canadian televisions after the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission approved the network. The Toronto-based Ethnic Channels Group Ltd. has agreed to act as sponsor and comments the Commission has received have been mostly positive. Only one commissioner was not on board with the decision. There was a previous failed attempt in 2003 to carry Al Jazeera Arabic, which didn’t find any Canadian carriers.
