First Run Features has bought the U.S. rights to The Last Season (pictured), a mushroom hunting documentary.

Directed by Sara Dosa and produced by Josh Penn (Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Great Invisible), The Last Season depicts the story of two war veterans – a Cambodian Khmer Freedom Fighter and an American sniper who fought in the Vietnam War – as their lives intersect while engaging in Oregon’s wild mushroom hunting trade.

The documentary, which had its world premiere at the 2014 San Francisco International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Gate Award for Best Bay Area Documentary, was recently nominated for the Film Independent Spirit Awards’ Truer than Fiction prize.

The Last Season, which also played at Hot Docs, has toured the festival circuit and will also enjoy a theatrical run and a First Run Features digital release prior to its 2015 national broadcast on PBS.
