Media HQ, Electus ready “Smartest Person” for U.S.

Toronto-based prodco Media Headquarters is partnering with multimedia studio Electus and Barracuda Television Productions for a U.S. version of the competition series Canada’s Smartest Person (pictured).

Originally developed by Canadian pubcaster the CBC, the primetime series presents competitors with challenges that go beyond regular IQ-testing questions. The series debuted in Canada in September 2014.

Former Zoo Productions co-CEO Barry Poznick teamed up with Electus to launch Barracuda Television Productions in 2013. The exec will serve as executive producer on the U.S. adaptation, which is currently being shopped to U.S. nets.

Electus previously licensed Canada’s Smartest Person to Turkey’s TRT and Sera Film for production, and has also secured deals in France, Norway, Sweden and Portugal.

“The successful roll-out of Canada’s Smartest Person proves that entertaining and accessible Canadian formats have a great chance for success beyond our borders,” said Robert Cohen, president of Media Headquarters, in a statement. “We’re thrilled to be working with Electus and Barracuda to bring this popular series to the U.S., and around the world.”
