Netflix will premiere a Morgan Neville-directed documentary about rock legend Keith Richards (pictured) on September 18.
Keith Richards: Under the Influence will delve into the Rolling Stones guitarist’s blues and country influences and “the genesis of his sound as a songwriter, guitarist and performer” as he records his first solo album in 23 years, Crosseyed Heart, which comes out on the same day.
The doc was produced by Radical Media (What Happened, Miss Simone?) and Tremolo Productions and draws upon new and old music, rare archival material as well as new interviews.
Neville followed Richards to Chicago, Nashville and New York, where he recorded the album with Steve Jordan and Waddy Wachtel. Richards’ friend and past collaborator Tom Waits also appears in the doc.
“If there’s a Mount Rushmore of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Keith’s face is surely on it. He has always represented the soul of rock music—for all of the light and dark shades that implies,” said Neville in a statement. “To my relief, Keith Richards turned out to be a real man—full of humor, knowledge and wisdom. That’s the real Keith we’ve worked to capture in our film and I’m honored to bring it to a global audience via Netflix.”
Keith Richards: Under the Influence was produced by Neville, Justin Wilkes and Jane Rose. It was shot by cinematographer Igor Martinovic and edited by Joshua L. Pearson.
