Discovery Communications has named Michael Lang (pictured) to the newly created role of executive VP of international development and digital.

In the post, the Lang Media Group president will drive corporate development at Discovery Networks International (DNI) with oversight of the strategy and execution of mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, divestitures and other equity-related transactions and third-party partnerships.

Additionally, Lang will work with the international management team to bolster the division’s overall digital approach while augmenting its existing initiatives, including Eurosport Player, Dplay and Discovery K!ds Play.

Scheduled to join the company’s London offices in April, the executive will report to Bruce Campbell, chief development, distribution and legal officer; and Jean-Briac Perrette, president of DNI.

As president of Lang Media Group, an advisory and sponsor equity firm, Lang most notably helped the California-based FilmTrack, a rights management software company, raise US$30 million in capital, while overseeing the sale of exhibition basketball team the Harlem Globetrotters and video game developer Foundation 9.

Prior to launching the firm, Lang served in a number of executive roles including CEO of Miramax, where he secured licensing deals with international TV and digital buyers; and executive VP of business development at Fox Entertainment, where he helped to launch SVOD platform Hulu and acquire the social networking platform MySpace. He also served in corporate and operating roles at The Walt Disney Company.

Lang currently serves on the board of directors of FilmTrack, OTT start-up SuperFan Network and non-profit organization Habitat for Humanity Los Angeles.

“As a highly regarded strategist, dealmaker and executive in both the entertainment and digital space, Mike’s vision and relationships combined with our robust portfolio, deep talent and strong momentum, will greatly benefit Discovery’s multi-platform strategy and drive immediate and impactful growth,” Campbell said in a statement.
