CTV details Canadian version of “Life in a Day” format 

CTV has chosen September 10 as the day Canadians will immortalize in the two-hour special Canada In a Day. Screen Sirens Media and director Trish Dolman are producing the crowdsourced film, which will air in 2017 as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations. Canadians have until midnight on October 22 to submit footage via Celebrity ambassadors involved in the program include Russell Peters, Shawn Ashmore, Karine Vanasse, Rick Hansen, Jacob Tremblay, Patrice Bernier, Jason Priestley, Tessa Virtue, Scott Moir and others. The special is based on Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald’s 2011 film Life in a Day (pictured). Since then, the format has been sold into Britain, Italy, Germany, Spain and Japan. Richie Mehta’s India in a Day premiered at Sheffield Doc/Fest earlier this month.

ORF-Enterprise, Maramedia to coproduce Nordic history wildlife doc

ORF-Enterprise, the commercial arm of Austrian pubcaster ORF, has inked a copro deal with Scottish company Maramedia (Hebrides and Highlands) for the blue-chip documentary Wild Way of the Vikings. The Nordic history doc will focus on wildlife in the Arctic and Nordic worlds that would have been seen for the first time as the Vikings journeyed across the Atlantic via the islands of Fire and Ice. Other co-producers on the project are France 5, BBC Scotland, WNET and ORF.

David Smyth  to lead Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution’s European operations

Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution (TCFTD) has promoted David Smyth to senior VP and MD for Europe. He is replacing Steve Cornish who is retiring after 30 years. Formerly senior VP of sales and development, Smyth has been with the company since 2009 and will now oversee day-to-day operations of TCFTD’s London office as well as distribution activities. He will also work on developing copro opportunities for programming that can air in the U.S. and globally.
