Hao Wu’s People’s Republic of Desire has taken home the Grand Jury prize in the Documentary Feature Competition at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival Awards.
The film looks at two live streamers who rose from isolation to fame and fortune in China. People’s Republic of Desire (pictured) takes audiences on a vérité journey through their live streaming showrooms, which have become virtual gathering places for hundreds of millions – both rich and poor.
Hosted by actor and comedian Jim Gaffigan at the Paramount Theater Tuesday (March 13), feature films receiving Jury and Special Awards were selected from the Narrative Feature and Doc Feature Competition categories.
Films in competition categories, as well as all feature categories – minus Special Events and the Title Design Competition entrants – are also eligible for the 2018 SXSW Film Festival Audience Awards.
Audience Awards will be announced separately on March 17, excluding Headliners, which will be announced on March 19.
SXSW also announced the Jury Award winners in the Shorts Program as well as the female-focused SXSW Luna Chicken & Egg Award in Documentary which was awarded to Alexandria Bombach for her depiction of one Yazidi girl’s search for justice in On Her Shoulders. The recipient was presented with a US$10,000 artist award and mentoring.
