Directors Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin (LA 92, Undefeated) are teaming up once again with Academy Award and Emmy-winning producers Simon Chinn and Jonathan Chinn of Lightbox to tell the story of global icon Tina Turner.
Tina Turner (working title) is the first feature documentary to be made about the legend and will feature interviews with friends, family members, musical collaborators, and Turner herself. These interviews will be interwoven with footage, including previously unseen material, showcasing the raw power and energy of the singer’s performances. The film goes beyond Turner’s public image and will uncover who the performer is as a private person, providing a comprehensive picture of an inspirational life and career. The film goes into production this summer.
Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee. Turner’s performing career had humble beginnings, singing in local church choirs before landing her big break performing with Ike Turner, whom she eventually married. Despite fame and global success, the marriage was turbulent and violent until the couple divorced in 1978. Despite the challenges that came her way, she blazed a path in her solo career that has made her one of the most successful singers of all time.
“This is the first time I’ve agreed to a be part of a major documentary about my life, and it’s certainly a leap of faith,” said Tina Turner, in a statement. “But I’m excited about the process we’re about to embark on and hope my story, presented in an honest and authentic way and made by award-winning documentary filmmakers, will give audiences a true sense of what life has been from my point of view.”
Altitude Film Sales will be bringing the feature documentary to buyers at Cannes with Altitude Film Distribution acquiring distribution rights for the UK and Ireland.
Altitude previously partnered with Lightbox on Academy Award-winning director Kevin Macdonald’s Whitney, about another legendary singer, the late Whitney Houston. The film was pre-sold worldwide at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016 and has its world premiere at Cannes this year.
Erwin Bach, record producer and Tina Turner’s partner and husband will executive produce alongside Tali Pelman of Stage Entertainment, which launched the stage show, Tina Turner The Musical in London’s West End last month. Will Clarke, Andy Mayson and Mike Runagall will serve as executive producers for Altitude.
