Global streaming service Netflix is set to premiere a new feature documentary about “the original influencer”, Clarence Avant.

The Black Godfather charts the unlikely rise of Avant, who offered advice to cultural icons including Bill Withers, Quincy Jones, Muhammad Ali, Hank Aaron, and Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

Avant defied notions of what a black executive could accomplish after leaving the Jim Crow south behind him to become a powerhouse negotiator in the face of overwhelming systemic racism in America.

Interviews include Obama and Clinton, Withers, Snoop Dogg, P. Diddy, Lionel Richie, Suzanne de Passe, David Geffen, Jerry Moss, Cicely Tyson and Jamie Foxx, among others.

The Black Godfather is directed by Reginald Hudlin, with Nicole Avant, Byron Phillips, Nelson George and Caitrin Rogers producing.

The film launches globally on Netflix on June 7.
