American premium cable net HBO is set to launch a new documentary about legendary funnyman Mel Brooks next month.
Mel Brooks Unwrapped looks back at the life and career of Brooks (pictured), known for his pioneering work in film and TV, including writing and directing landmark films The Producers, Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles and earning the rare EGOT status after winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award for his work across entertainment spheres.
The hour-long film includes interviews with the actor, writer, producer and director, conducted by Alan Yentob, former creative director for the BBC. Combining Yentob’s archival material with present-day interviews and vérité footage of the now 93-year-old Brooks, the doc offers numerous anecdotes from throughout his career and follows him in his day-to-day life, including a visit with long-time friend and collaborator Carl Reiner.
To celebrate the new special, previous HBO specials Mel Brooks Live at the Geffen and Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again will return on HBO Go and HBO Now.
The film is a Brooksfilms production, produced and directed by Alan Yentob. Mel Brooks serves as executive producer, with Tanya Hudson co-producing for the BBC. Kevin Salter and Shelby Van Vliet also serve as co-producers.
Mel Brooks Unwrapped debuts exclusively on HBO Dec. 13 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and will be available on HBO Now, HBO Go, HBO On Demand and partners’ streaming platforms.
