As the international non-fiction and unscripted screen content industry descends upon the Sheraton New Orleans for the 2020 edition of the annual Realscreen Summit, we’re providing an overview of the keynotes, various sessions and special events that will take place from January 27-30.
Jacqueline Parkes, recently named chief marketing officer and head of digital studios for ViacomCBS’ Entertainment and Youth Group, will provide the opening keynote for this year’s Summit on Monday at 9 a.m. (Note new time!) Parkes will discuss the importance of building fan communities around content, bridging the gap between linear and digital, and using digital to connect with Gen Z.
Later on Monday afternoon, a keynote panel discussion, Foresight is 2020: State of the Nation, will bring together top executives to discuss the rapid pace of change enveloping the content industry today and what changes to prepare for in the near future.
Tuesday will kick off at 9:30 a.m. with a keynote conversation featuring Discovery Inc. chief lifestyle brands officer Kathleen Finch. She will share her thoughts on how her role has evolved following the Discovery/Scripps merger, how the company itself has evolved and her take on the trends impacting the non-fiction screen content industry, and the television industry at large.
Later that day, at 3:45 p.m., PBS president and CEO and Realscreen Hall of Fame inductee Paula Kerger will take the stage to discuss her career and achievements to date, as well as her views on the present and future state of public broadcasting, and non-fiction programming.
Wednesday features Linear: Alive and Well, a keynote session featuring top cable network execs who will discuss how they’re thriving in the post-SVOD era through honing their offerings, maximizing their franchises, commissioning “on brand” content and more. That’s at 9:30 a.m.
Also taking place during the Summit: our annual Realscreen Awards, honoring the best in global non-fiction and unscripted programming. Hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Ross Mathews, this year’s celebration takes place on Tuesday, January 28 at 6:15 p.m. and will feature Hall of Fame presentations to Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz, and PBS’s Paula Kerger.
The annual Summit Showdown live pitch competition, with A&E and HGTV as participating networks offering up development deals worth US$20,000, takes place on Monday at 4:45 p.m.
Look for a wide range of subject matter to be covered in the content at this year’s Summit, ranging from discussions about duty of care to development trends, from the natural history renaissance to the Esports revolution, and from making diversity and inclusion a priority in your business to getting the inside scoop on what’s happening at Disney+.
