The distribution arm of German pubcaster ZDF – ZDF Enterprises – has announced a landmark new natural history series being filmed in UHD, Africa from Above.

The 10 x 52-minute project is being produced by Off the Fence Productions, with the support of a range of coproducers that include South Africa’s Homebrew Films and ARTE, along with broadcasters ZDF, ORF and UKTV. ZDF Enterprises will serve as global distributor.

The series considers Africa’s spectacular landscapes, cities, people and wildlife from a new perspective by taking cameras high above the landscape. It explores the wilderness, weaving through mountains, coastlines, waterfalls and jungles, while also taking in the human experience, hovering over cities to examine history, architecture and industry.

“I am delighted to have such a wide range of coproduction partners supporting this epic series,” said Ralf Rueckauer (pictured), VP of ZDF.unscripted, in a statement. “By using the latest technology, airborne and on the ground, this production will capture Africa in a way that has never been seen before.”
