Hulu’s Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi, VH1′s RuPaul’s Drag Race and Netflix’s Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer were among the top winners at the Realscreen Awards this afternoon (Jan. 26).

The 11th annual awards show, celebrates outstanding content from across the non-fiction and unscripted entertainment industries, and this year boasted a record breaking 593 entries from 16 countries worldwide. The ceremony was hosted by actor and comedian Michael Yo, host of The Michael Yo Show podcast and fresh off his critically acclaimed comedy special Blasian.

Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi (pictured), produced by David Shadrack Smith’s Part2 Pictures and Delicious Entertainment, picked up two awards, including the award of excellence for lifestyle, and the lifestyle award in the docureality-style food program category.

As previously announced, industry veteran Arthur Smith, founder and chairman of A. Smith & Co. Productions and chairman of Tinopolis Group U.S., and RuPaul Charles, executive producer and host of the Emmy Award-winning RuPaul’s Drag Race, were inducted into the Realscreen Awards Hall of Fame.

“I have always believed in the importance and power of reach. When we reach and extend ourselves, we find out that we’re more capable than we imagined. And only when we reach, do we get to achieve our full potential,” said Smith in his acceptance speech.

Smith continued: “When I talk about the power of reach, it’s not just about extending yourself but also knowing when to reach out to others. Luckily, I reached out to my good friend Kent Weed. Together, we built the company and shared so many amazing moments I’m grateful for his dedication and partnership and most of all this friendship.

“My ability to reach for more is founded in the strength and balance I draw from my family, my incredible loving and supportive parents who are enjoying this from above, and so many amazing women. My wife Wendy. My daughters, Rachel and Leah, my two sisters Maryland and Cheryl. All of them who put up with me and support me unconditionally.”

Smith ended his speech by encouraging those in hiring positions to “continue the transformation our industry is experiencing. Let’s nurture our young people; be inclusive with hiring.”

In accepting his Hall of Fame award, RuPaul Charles noted that this award marked a win for those still looking for their moment to breakthrough: “I’m proud that our little show has brought audiences at home and abroad so much light, laughter and joy, and it’s our queens that continue to inspire us with their courage and creativity. I accept this honor on their behalf. And on behalf of all the other baby drag queens that are out there waiting for their moment to shine. Thank you so much.”

Netflix’s true crime investigation, Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer, and VH1′s RuPaul’s Drag Race from World of Wonder were each feted with two awards.

Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer, produced by the award-winning London outfit Raw TV, scored the award of excellence in non-fiction and the crime & investigation program award for non-fiction.

Elsewhere, VH1′s RuPaul’s Drag Race from World of Wonder received the award for talent & studio-based competition in the competition category, as well as the award of excellence for competition series.

Meanwhile Sydney-based studio Northern Pictures, a division of Canada’s Blue Ant Media, also picked up two honors in the reality category for Love on the Spectrum. The Netflix docuseries, which follows seven young adults on the autism spectrum exploring the world of love and relationships, was feted with the docureality award and the award of excellence for reality series.

The New York Times’ Almost Famous from Los Angeles-based Breakwater Studios walked away with the Realscreen Award for diversity and inclusion.
