HBO has announced a new three-part documentary, Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union, about the life and journey of America’s first Black president, to premiere next month as a three-night event.

The documentary will debut on HBO on August 3, with subsequent installments airing the following two nights. It will also be available to stream on HBO Max.

Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union tells the story of Barack Obama, beginning with his childhood and taking viewers through his political rise to become a historic figure as the U.S. continues to grapple with its racially divisive history. Part one focuses on Obama’s early life and career; the second part examines his political rise and election to America’s highest office; and finally, part three covers his presidency, including the bitter political battles he faced.

The series features interviews with late Representative John Lewis, political consultant David Axelrod, Rev. Al Sharpton, Cornel West, Jesse Jackson, author Ta-Nehisi Coates, actor Keegan-Michael Key and more.

Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union was directed by Emmy winner Peter Kunhardt (True Justice: Bryan Stevenson’s Fight For Equality, John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls). It was produced by Kunhardt and Teddy Kunhardt, Matthew O. Henderson, and edited and produced by Maya Mumma. Executive producers are Peter Kunhardt, Andi Bernstein, Mona Sutphen, Jelani Cobb and Jacqueline Glover. Sara Rodriguez was senior producer for HBO, with executive producers Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller.
