Mediawan takes Godard doc to EFM

Paris-based Mediawan Rights will be shopping Godard Cinema, a doc about the legendary French New Wave director, at the upcoming virtual European Film Market (February 10 to 17). The 90-minute film is the first documentary from the prodco and distributor’s feature-length slate.

“Mediawan Rights couldn’t have imagined a better film to launch its first feature-length label,” said Mediawan’s head of documentary sales Arianna Castoldi in a news release. “Godard Cinema explores the life and work of an undisputed genius of French cinema, and it is a privilege to bring the project to an international audience.”

Godard Cinema will employ interviews, clips and archival footage to tell the story of the hugely influential French filmmaker, who achieved international fame with his debut feature Breathless and spent the following 60 years making a series of adventurous, widely disparate films that sometimes frustrated his admirers as much as his critics. Among the notable names interviewed for the doc are actresses Nathalie Baye, who starred in Godard’s 1979 “comeback” Every Man for Himself and his 1985 film noir riff Détective, and Julie Delpy, who made her screen debut in Détective at age 14.

The film is produced by 10.7 Productions and directed by Cyril Leuthy, who previously helmed a 2020 doc about one of Godard’s idols, French crime-movie master Jean-Pierre Melville (who had a memorable cameo in Breathless).

Banijay confirms two new CEE editions of Survivor

Banijay Rights has signed co-production deals for two new versions of Survivor in the Central and Eastern Europe region.

United Media will partner with Banijay to broadcast the first edition of the trend-setting format in Croatia via Nova TV, and Serbia via Nova S. Acuyn Media, meanwhile, will be the local producer for a version to air on TV Markíza in Slovakia and TV Nova in the Czech Republic.

Survivor has long been a global television hit, [and] these new versions prove this format continues to have fresh and broad appeal for broadcasters worldwide,” said Samia Moktar, vice president, CEE and Airlines for Banijay Rights, who brokered both of the new agreements.

The announcement indicates a healthy start for the format in 2022 following its record-breaking year in 2021, when 24 international productions of Survivor were confirmed.

Quintus launches new coproduction label with automotive series Supercar Tech

Quintus Studios will partner with US prodco Cry Havoc Productions on the new series Supercar Tech (5 x 60 min.), which will explore the world of high-performance sports cars by taking viewers under the hood to discover their inner workings and chronicling the technological and design advances that made them possible.

This is the first announced commission for the Berlin-based factual distributor’s Quintus Original slate, which will see the company acting as the primary investor and worldwide rights holder for a series of new international co-productions.
