New York-based unscripted production company Magilla Entertainment is collaborating with Michael Sugar‘s Sugar23 production platform to develop a slate of content.
The slate will include a variety of unscripted projects, spanning different reality genres. Sugar23 head of alternative and unscripted David Hillman will lead the partnership for his company, working alongside Magilla’s co-founders Laura Palumbo Johnson and Matthew Ostrom and president Jason Fox.
Some projects already in development through the partnership are a new cooking series, a prank competition series, and an intergenerational dating social experiment titled The Grand Date Experiment, which aims to take on modern dating dilemmas that exist for both millennials and boomers. In the series, pairs of grandparents and grandchildren take control of each other’s dating rituals and relationships.
“Matt, Laura and Jason are the best at what they do, and Sugar23 can’t wait to collaborate with them to develop content that is fresh, entertaining and forward-thinking. Reality TV provides the fun escape that we all need, and we have found the perfect partners to make it with,” Hillman said.
Magilla is one of the largest independent unscripted prodcos in the U.S., and is home to hits like Moonshiners, Master Distiller, Beach Front Bargain Hunt, Rise Up: The Moment That Changed America and more. Sugar has worked on award-winning scripted projects like Spotlight, The Knick, The OA, Maniac and 13 Reasons Why.
