The MIP List is a curated list of new shows that are hitting the global market at MIPTV this year. Check out what’s making waves, and why they’re sked-worthy. MIPTV runs from April 8 to 10 in Cannes, France.
This spring, the ZDF Studios Unscripted team arrives at MIPTV with a wide selection of documentaries that were created by talented producers and renowned co-producers. Their latest offerings come from a variety of genres, including landmark wildlife, science and history.
Foremost among the team’s latest projects is Time: A Journey Through Thousands of Years (pictured top). The two-part series is a co-production between ZDF Studios, the Film, Drama and Documentary Programming Center of China Media Group (CMG), and ARTE. Exploring the universal concept of time, the producers aim to discover how we can live happier lives, both individually and as a species.
The Lost Women Spies, meanwhile, follows the success of War Gamers to delve into the history of women in WWII. (With a similar style and feel, this title is a response to viewer demand for more stories about women at war.)
Finally, Wild Talk showcases the fascinating world of animal communication, featuring scientists working with cutting-edge technology — including computer simulations, AI and advanced recording devices. Can we finally talk to the animals?
Wild Talk
The new wildlife and science series Wild Talk, produced by Off the Fence for ZDF Studios in association with ZDF and ARTE, explores the latest research on animal communication, decoding the complex languages of animals to discover that they are just as talkative as humans. For the first time, we can eavesdrop on the secret conversations going on all around us. (5 x 50 minutes)
Time: A Journey Through Thousands of Years
Time: A Journey Through Thousands of Years is a ZDF production that explores the discovery of time, its history and impact on our lives. It analyzes long-term studies to understand how time restricts our lives and makes happiness harder to find. Look for the documentary to be showcased at MIPdoc in the session titled “MIPdoc Co-Production Summit: A Vision For The Future Of Unscripted.” (2 x 50 minutes)
The Lost Women Spies
The Lost Women Spies is a new docu-drama series co-produced by ZDF Studios and World Media Rights. It explores the story of the British female spies who were sent to the front line in France in WWII, despite British laws banning women from combat. (Remarkably, top secret files detailing their lives were discovered in a shed in Cornwall in 2000!) This series is scheduled for completion in Spring 2024. (6 x 50 minutes)
