‘A Hard Name’ takes Best Doc Genie Award

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television has recognized ex-convict doc A Hard Name as the Best Feature Length Documentary at the Genie Awards. The film, from Kristina McLaughlin, Michael McMahon and Alan Zweig, gave an intimate look at ex-cons as they talk about their lives in prison and what it's like on the outside. A Hard Name beat out nominees Larry Weinstein, Rudolf Biermann and Jessica Daniel for Inside Hana's Suitcase, Claude Demers for Les dames en bleu / Ladies in Blue, Patricia Aquino and Paul Saltzman for Prom Night in Mississippi and Mila Aung-Thwin, Kat Baulu, Brett Gaylor, Germaine Ying-Gee Wong for RiP: A Remix Manifesto. The Best Short Documentary winner was The Delian Mode, presented to Kara Blake and Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre. The Delian Mode spotlights the life and work of influential electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire. Other nominees in the category are Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre for Passages and Peter Mettler, Sandy Hunter and Laura Severinac for Petropolis: Aerial Perspectives on the Alberta Tar Sands.
