Helping boundary-pushing non-fiction cross borders
A longtime festival strategist for UK distributor Dogwoof, Luke Brawley launched his own boutique agency Indox in March 2024 with a mission to help adventurous and formally daring non-fiction works find the international audiences they deserve. Among the projects that Indox has taken on its first year are the TIFF 2024 world premiere Blue Road – The Edna O'Brien Story, Sinéad O'Shea's profile of the acclaimed Irish novelist; The Shepherd and the Bear, from debuting director Max Keegan, which portrays a clash between tradition and modernity against the backdrop of the French Pyrenees; and There Was, There Was Not by filmmaker Emily Mkrtichian, which follows the lives of four women through the prelude and aftermath of the 2023 invasion of the autonomous republic of Artsakh. What changes would you like to see, and help create, in the industry?
"I believe there should be more support for the sales and distribution of innovative non-fiction films, especially those pushing the boundaries of traditional documentary. I firmly believe there is always an audience for fresh, unique approaches to storytelling within the doc genre, and I hope to see more flexible, enthusiastic parties like Indox continuing to connect groundbreaking films with global audiences."
