ESPN Films, espnW ready doc series “Nine for IX Shorts”

ESPN Films and female-focused digital portal espnW are set to launch a doc shorts series on women in sports entitled Nine for IX Shorts, airing this July.

The series of six shorts – an extension of the feature-length Nine for IX series that aired on ESPN last summer – focuses on the stories of women in sports, told by female filmmakers. Some of the athletes included in the series are basketball star Brittney Griner, MMA fighter Ronda Rousey, and the mother of autistic basketball player Jason McElwain.

One short will premiere each day from July 28 to August 1. Robin Roberts and Jane Rosenthal will return as exec producers of the series.

A preview of Nine for IX - Hannah Storm’s short Love & Payne, on the legacy of golfer Payne Stewart through the eyes of his widow Tracey - will air on today (June 4).

The remaining doc shorts include the Mundo Sisters’ Rowdy Ronda Rousey (July 28) on MMA fighter Rousey; Nikki Reed’s Think Normal (July 29) about autistic basketball player McElwain and his mother; Melissa Johnson’s Brittney Griner: Lifesize (July 30) on the young basketball star; Tina Carbone’s Uncharted Waters (July 31) about the 1995 all-women America’s Cup yachting team; and Jessica Wolfson’s Play A Round With Me (August 1) about Jan Stephenson, professional golf’s first tabloid star.
