Alabama State University’s marching band, the Mighty Marching Hornets (pictured), is at the center of the series Bama State Style, premiering tonight (April 17) on U.S. net Lifetime.

The eight-episode series from Young Marvels producer Tremendous! Entertainment profiles the band – which has been featured in such acts as Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke’s performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards – as it searches for its drum major. Five candidates go head-to-head in auditions while the band’s dance teams, the Stingettes and the Honey Beez, get ready for the next season.

In the exclusive clip below, the band prepares to start the search for its drum major, who is tasked with directing the troupe for its popular weekly halftime performances.

Bama State Style debuts tonight on Lifetime at 11 p.m. EST/PST.
