Discovery Communications has hired DirecTV exec Karen Leever as executive VP and general manager for digital media.

She replaces Sean Atkins, who left the company earlier this month to become president at MTV.

Leever will head up Discovery’s digital brands and business in the U.S., which includes Discovery Digital Networks and the newly launched virtual-reality platform, Discovery VR. She will also lead strategy, design and development for Discovery’s apps and websites.

She will be based in New York and report to chief commercial officer Paul Guyardo, another former DirecTV exec. He joined Discovery in September.

Leever is formerly the senior VP of digital and direct sales for satellite TV provider DirecTV. She spent 10 years with the company where she drove subscriptions, digital product strategy and crosss-platform digital efforts.

Prior to that, she worked at Kmart as VP of e-commerce and marketing and, before that, spent a decade in electronic TV retail at HSN and QVC.
