SXSW ’16: Vimeo to launch first original doc

Video-sharing and VOD platform Vimeo is to premiere its first original doc, Wizard Mode, this spring.

Produced by Salazar Film, the doc – which is also the site’s first feature-length film – follows Canadian pinball player Robert Emilio Gagno, who has dedicated much of his life to mastering and unlocking the highest level of pinball, wizard mode.

Gagno, who is autistic, has been supported by his parents in his pinball pursuits, but now has to gain independence from his family and balance adult responsibilities while striving to be a world pinball champion.

Wizard Mode is directed by Nathan Drillot and Jeff Lee Petry of Salazar Film, 10-time Vimeo Staff Pick creators.

Other Vimeo originals launching this year include the company’s first concert film, Toro Y Moi: Live in Concert, as well as the comedy special Garfunkel & Oates: Trying to be Special and the series Lonely and Horny. Vimeo’s first original programming efforts included the High Maintenance series as well as the series Con ManOscar’s Hotel for Fantastical Creatures and most recently, The Outs.

Earlier this week, Vimeo revealed it had struck a development partnership with film and media incubator Big Empty Wallet’s Kickstart Diversity program. The platform in January launched its three-part “Share the Screen” initiative.
