Discovery Channel has named two senior directors of development, reporting to SVP for development and production Dolores Gavin.

Matt Kelly has been upped to the post from his previous position as director of development for Discovery Channel. Before that role, he’d been with sister net Science as director of program development, and prior to that, he’d been with the Discovery Communications flagship channel as a project manager in program development, where he worked on such series as Gold Rush: Alaska; Man, Woman, Wild; and Surviving the Cut.

Mike Sorensen comes to Discovery Channel from Science, where he was also director of program development. In that role he worked on series such as Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, Dark Matters and Oddities, and he also led the creative team in establishing the network’s ‘Sci-Sports’ strand with programming such as Punkin’ Chunkin’ and Large Dangerous Rocket Ships (LDRS).

“In Matt and Mike, Discovery has a dream team full of creative energy, vibrant vision and smart instincts,” said Gavin regarding the moves. “Our development pipeline will continue to tap into provocative worlds and personalities, leading the field in programming with bite and edge.”
