Summit 2012: Collins Avenue, Content Media extend partnership

Los Angeles-based prodco Collins Avenue has added two more years to its partnership with distribution company Content Media, with a new hire joining the Dance Moms production company and a Nat Geo commission in the pipeline, realscreen can reveal.

Los Angeles-based prodco Collins Avenue has added two more years to its partnership with distribution company Content Media , with a new hire joining the Dance Moms production company, realscreen can reveal.

Last year Collins extended its deal with LA- and London-based Content Media to two years, and now the two companies are continuing the 50-50 partnership between president Jeff Collins and Content Media Corp.

Content Media, which is an international distributor, owns a 50-50 stake in all of Collins Avenue projects,  which include American Stuffers, Dance Moms, and the recently announced spin-off Dance Moms: Miami and Ice Moms.

John Schmidt, CEO of Content Media, told realscreen: “The amount of growth and the trajectory of the company over the last six to eight months has been spectacular and that’s all due to Jeff’s brilliant production efforts. We’re very excited to continue with that and see the company grow some more.”

Collins added: “It’s incredibly exciting and, dare I say, an enormous level of security when you’re a production company and you have partners who do business on an international stage.

“When I’m stuck in a place where I’m in new territory and there are things that I don’t understand in terms of the business, [having Content] continue to show me great guidance and give great advice allows me to pursue the things I’m passionate about as a storyteller and yet have that comfort level of knowing they’ve always got my back.”

In addition to the partnership extension, Collins Avenue has added to its team, making Bryan Stinson a permanent member of the prodco. Stinson, who co-created Dance Moms with Collins, now serves as an in-house executive producer on both of the Dance Moms series and Ice Moms.

Collins says that as the company grows, Stinson will be assigned to more projects and will continue to do all of the casting.

As for the production company, one of the projects in the works is a National Geographic Channel series on the American religious colony of Hutterites.

“They’ve never been filmed. [There are] 200,000 of them in the U.S. and we are the very first to get permission to do a 10-hour docuseries inside a religious colony. We work very hard to gain the trust of the people who allow us to document their lives. That trust is scared to us,” said Collins.

The working title for the series is One Big Family: The Hutterites. Nat Geo estimates an airdate in Q3 this year.
