French public TV network France 5 has commissioned independent prodco Pernel Media to produce a new documentary series that sets out to chart the history of Europe.
Produced in both French and international versions, The Real War of Thrones; A History of Europe (4 x 60′) recounts the rival dynasties that forged the history of modern Europe. Using drama reconstruction, the series brings to life the motivations and experiences of the players and what they stood to win and what they risked losing.
Each episode focuses on a period of 30 to 40 years which aligns with a critical moment of European history and a confrontation between two rival European houses and their allies.
Audiences witness how European power is traded between a few families across the generations through a series of clashes — such as Edward Plantagenet’s conflict with the house of Valois, Henry VI’s battles with Charles VII and the Hundred Years War and the Duke of Burgundy’s struggles with Louis XI and Charles V wars with Francis I.
Distributed by France Télévisions Distribution The Real War of Thrones; A History of Europe — except the UK where the prodco retains the rights — was commissioned by Caroline Behar, head of documentaries, and Thierry Mino, deputy head of documentaries, acquisitions and international co-productions, at France 5. Executive producer is Samuel Kissous for Pernel Media.
“This is a very ambitious, blue chip docu-drama production. Given its production value and the stories it will tackle, it’s a truly international series. We are very grateful that France 5 has shown such confidence in the project as it is the first series produced to this standard for a very long time,” said Kissous, president of Pernel Media, (pictured), in a statement.
Pernel Media has produced several prime-time one-off documentaries and series for France 5 and other networks in the past three years including 20 Years on Death Row for 13éme Rue, Immigration – Tearing my Family Apart for Channel 5 and Extreme Earth for France 5.
