Jamie Redford’s feature-length documentary Happening: A Clean Energy Revolution will receive its television debut when it airs across premium cable network HBO on Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

The 71-minute film (pictured), which screened as part of DOC NYC last night and was revealed as part of HBO’s slate in July, follows the son of actor and environmental advocate Robert Redford on a cross-country journey to discover the innovators, entrepreneurs, politicians, community activists and ordinary citizens who are pioneering the use of clean energy technology.

Happening traces Redford to such unlikely green cities as Georgetown, Texas; Nipton, California; and Buffalo, New York where new jobs are being created and making American communities stronger and healthier.

Through visits to the world’s largest commercial solar-thermal facility, the largest solar panel manufacturing plant in the western world, and a renewably-powered Apple data center, the documentary reveals revolutionary renewable-energy solutions while also underscoring the issues of human resilience and social justice.

“If clean energy has a chance to offset the worst of climate change, then we have to change the story we are hearing and the dialogue we are having to get more support for it,” Redford tells realscreen. “I wanted to introduce a little more hope into this discussion, and show the progress that’s happening worldwide on the issue.

“After wonderful receptions at festivals across the country, I am thrilled for Happening: A Clean Energy Revolution to reach new audiences on HBO this December, and hopefully start conversations about avoiding the worst of climate change with exciting new technologies and economies that are happening now.”

Executive producers for the film include Jeff and Laurie Ubben, The Neda Nobari Foundation, James Langer and Todd Clayton Chaffee. It was produced by Redford and Jill Tidman.

HBO’s Jesse Weinraub is coordinating producer; Nancy Abraham is senior producer; and Sheila Nevins is executive producer.

Happening: A Clean Energy Revolution will also be made available to view across HBO on Demand, HBO Now and HBO Go, as well as affiliate portals.
