UK-based factual indie Sundog Pictures has expanded its executive team with the appointments of Katie Buchanan as creative director and Claire Featherstone as its first chief operating officer.

Buchanan joins the London-headquartered producer on March 19 from Films of Record, where she most recently served as executive producer.

An award-winning executive producer responsible for more than 50 hours of primetime documentaries, Buchanan’s credits include Channel 4′s real-world experiment Living with the Amish and award-winning The Romanians Are Coming; BBC2′s Absolutely Fashion: Inside British Vogue; and BBC3′s Excluded: Kicked Out Of School.

Previously, Buchanan held senior titles at Keo Films as head of documentary and head of development, and was also an executive producer at Lightbox Entertainment and Minnow Films.

“Katie’s experience really sets her apart in the industry,” said Sundog Pictures CEO Johnny Webb in a statement. “She has the ability to take serious subjects and deliver them with a lightness of touch that both attracts critical plaudits and engages audiences.”

Featherstone, meanwhile, was most recently consulting TV and digital media companies, including Sundog. As a consultant, she provided strategic, operational, financial and production support.

A senior industry exec with more than 20 years’ experience, Featherstone was formerly MD at indie Flame Television, where she oversaw the company’s programming slate and led its push into popular factual programming. She also managed Flame’s sale to the Avalon Entertainment Group, concluding the earn-out in 2012.

Her production credits include BBC1′s long-running series Heir Hunters, Channel 4′s The Queen’s Lost Uncle, Fusion’s Animal Mafia and A&E’s Lost in Love.

Featherstone takes up her permanent role in April.

“Claire’s skills have been honed from leading the growth of a successful indie, so she is perfectly placed to help take Sundog to its next stage of development,” added Webb. “We not only want to expand our work in the UK market, but also grow our footprint in the US.  We have significant opportunities in that market and many projects under discussion.  Claire is the perfect person to steer us through this path of international expansion.”
