Spike Lee will take the helm for an upcoming ESPN project on former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

ESPN Films announced Thursday (February 3) that Lee will direct the previously announced multi-part documentary on Kaepernick. The project had been announced last year as part of The Walt Disney Company’s overall first-look deal with Kaepernick’s production arm Ra Vision Media.

Kaepernick played six seasons for the San Francisco 49ers, from 2011 to 2016. In 2016, he began kneeling during the U.S. national anthem at the start of games to protest police brutality and racial injustice. Kaepernick became a free agent after the 2016 season, and has remained unsigned by any football team since then. Many have attributed Kaepernick not being signed to the polarizing reaction and aftermath of his high-profile protests.

The former 49ers star has never given a full, first-person account of his journey before. In the new series, Lee plans to use extensive new interviews and previously unseen archival footage to allow Kaepernick to tell his story from his perspective.

ESPN Films will executive produce the documentary, with Lee’s 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks producing the project. Former ESPN TV personality Jemele Hill is also a producer on the series.
