MTV unveils Are You the One? UK, new digital series Merch Masters

MTV International is launching a UK version of its hit matchmaking competition Are You the One?, which will be launching this summer on Paramount+ UK and MTV channels outside the U.S.

The format gathers 20 singles inside a house, all of whom have a “perfect match” (as per a matchmaking algorithm) with one of the others, but whose identity is unknown to them. On each episode of the 10-week series, each contestant will be paired with a potential match as the group is subjected to a series of challenges, activities and revelations. If the entire house can collectively identify the 10 “perfect matches” by the end of the series, they will not only have found their potential true loves but also take home a cash prize.

The UK edition, which will be hosted by presenter Joelah Noble (pictured), marks the eighth international adaptation of the format, following versions in Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, Mexico, Sweden and the Netherlands. It was commissioned for MTV International by Kelly Bradshaw and Craig Orr, and will be produced by Lime Pictures. Orr and Amy Boyle are executive producers.

In other MTV news, the channel revealed this week that it would launch a new digital series, the music-focused design competition Merch Masters, on its YouTube channel this Thursday (July 21).

Hosted by TikTok star Tefi Pessoa, the series pits two designers against each other in a head-to-head battle to create custom-made merch-table items for some of today’s biggest music stars, including Lil Nas X, Saweetie, Camila Cabello and J Balvin. The winner of the competition, as selected by a panel of rotating judges, will take home a $1,000 cash prize.

Abacus to distribute high-end historical docuseries The Frontier

Abacus Media Rights (AMR) will handle worldwide distribution rights for The Frontier (6 x 60 min.), a premium factual series from Daniel Sharp’s Dash Pictures that sets out to print the facts about the Old West, rather than the legend.

Financed by AMR parent Amcomri Entertainment, The Frontier goes behind the Hollywood image of the Wild West and the myths about the era that have embedded themselves in American culture, society and politics. Using cinematic recreations, interviews with experts on the periods and high-end graphics, the series will delve into the facts behind such widespread beliefs or assumptions as that all cowboys were white; that all town sheriffs were keepers of the peace; and that Indigenous peoples would regularly attack white people without provocation.

“We are extremely pleased to have greenlit this fascinating series from factual experts Dash Pictures,” Amcomri CEO Robert Price said. “Daniel has a unique ability to bring the past alive in a way that captivates viewers, and which will appeal to AMR’s strong client base around the world.”

“Dash Pictures has developed a distinctive and engaging unscripted series which will take the viewer into an all-immersive adventure into a fascinating part of history,” AMR managing director Jonathan Ford said. ” While we think we know what it was like to live in the Wild West through the cowboy films we’ve all seen, this documentary will expose the real dangers, heartbreak, struggle and the bravery that was shouldered by so many to build America.”

Sky Sports slates hidden-camera unscripted comedy Player Pranks ahead of Premier League season launch

UK indie Zig Zag Productions is partnering with program financier Krempelwood for Player Pranks (4 x 30 min.), a football-focused unscripted comedy series for Sky Sports.

Each episode of the format will feature Premier League Manchester City defender Micah Richards and Sky Sports presenter Adam “Smithy” Smith taking hidden cameras out onto the field, along with props and carefully placed actors, to pull pranks on some of the UK’s most famous football personalities.

The series is slated to premiere in August premiere on Sky Sports and Sky Max, as part of the countdown to the 2022-23 Premiere League season launch on August 5.
