Distributor ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVS GE) has acquired hybrid reality series Boom Town from UK indie Knickerbockerglory.

Boom Town (6 x 30-minutes plus format) is a hybrid show that “mixes the conventions of structured reality with those of a traditional sketch show,” according to ITVS GE.

While everyone who appears in the show is “completely real,” the way their lives will be cut together in editing “will push strongly on the conventions of a sketch show.” Fake town shots will help create the illusion that Boom Town is a real place where the people live together.

Produced by Knickerbockerglory TV for BBC3 in the UK, ITVS GE will launch Boom Town as both finished product and format at MIPTV in Cannes next month.

Jonathan Stadlen, MD of Knickerbockerglory, said: “Boom Town is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Mixing documentary and sketch show conventions has made it the most exciting and creatively interesting project to work on.

“ITVS GE did such a great job distributing our last series Pineapple Dance Studios – made by the same production team – so we’re looking forward to working with them again on another genre-bending show.”
