Scottish comedian and actor Billy Connolly is set to star in the forthcoming ITV docuseries Billy Connolly’s Tracks Across America.

Having previously biked across America’s most celebrated highway in Billy Connolly’s Route 66, the 7 Wonder-produced 3 x 60-minute series will showcase the Lord of the Rings star traversing 28 states and 8,000 miles (12,875 kms) across the U.S. mainland by locomotive.

The three-part series will have Connolly meet assorted characters in the badlands of North Dakota, Arizona’s arid desert and alongside Louisiana’s swamps, among other locales.

Exec produced by Steve Condie for 7 Wonder, the program will be series produced by Michelle Crowther and directed by Mike Reilly.

The series was commissioned for ITV by Jo Clinton-Davis, controller of factual, and Richard Klein, director of factual.

“Billy’s infectious joy at discovering new experiences and meeting new people makes every journey he does with us an exceptional ride,” said Clinton-Davis in a statement. “His passion for seeking out the spirit of the U.S. in all its richly varied forms makes him the perfect guide to take us on this iconic trip.”
