The distributor plans to give the film a limited theatrical release, followed by a digital and home video release.
Film Movement president Michael E. Rosenberg closed the deal with EyeSteelFilm and New York’s Submarine Entertainment at Berlin International Film Festival’s European Film Market.
Starring artists such as Bobby Rush, Barbara Lynn and Lazy Lester, I Am the Blues follows the last of the Mississippi Delta’s original blues musicians, many of whom are in their ’80s, as they tour the Chitlin’ Circuit in the American deep south.
The film is written and directed by EyeSteelFilm co-founder Daniel Cross, who also served as a producer alongside Bob Moore. Executive producers on the project are Mila Aung-Thwin and Bruce Cowley. In French Canada, the film was released in June 2016 through EyeSteel, while Films We Like distributed the film in English Canada.
I Am the Blues world premiered at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in 2015 and later made its North American premiere at SXSW in 2016. The doc was last month nominated for two Canadian Screen Awards, for best feature documentary and best cinematography in a documentary.
