Sony partners with Scripps, Discovery for web-TV service

Playstation Vue will feature live, on-demand and catch-up TV content from CBS, Discovery Communications, Fox Networks Group and Scripps Networks Interactive.

Sony has revealed more details about its upcoming cloud-TV service called PlayStation Vue.

Available initially through the third- and fourth-gen consoles, the Internet TV service will launch this month in invite-only beta, carrying 75 channels per market from major programmers like CBS, Discovery Communications and Scripps Networks Interactive. A commercial launch is expected next year, after which the service will be available in markets outside of New York, and on other devices such as the iPad.

No details on pricing are being revealed but the company said the offering would be “changing the rules for how people pay for subscription TV.”

“Today’s announcement builds on the historic success of PlayStation 4 and demonstrates what our company is capable of when we embrace disruption and stay true to gamers,” said Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment and group executive in charge of the Network Entertainment Business.

It is unclear whether there will be an emphasis on creating original programming for the Vue. However, Sony has already signaled it wants to produce original content for PlayStation that aligns with its youth-skewing gamer demo.

PlayStation Vue is touting a recommendation engine that filters programming by genre, ratings, popularity and length. It will have both live and catch-up programming, making the past three days available without the need to schedule recordings. It will also enable viewers to “tag” a series and access it for 28 days.

A full list of the content distribution deals:

  • CBS, which recently launched a free streaming news network, will offer live linear signal from its TV stations in select markets in addition to on-demand primetime programming.
  • A Discovery Communications deal encompasses 18 networks and services, including all 13 U.S. cable nets and digital entertainment from Discovery Digital Networks and Animal Planet Live.
  • Fox Networks Group will make national entertainment and sports programming available from FX, FXX, FXM, National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo Wild. Additionally Fox Sports’ regional ┬ánetworks including YES Network and Prime Ticket fall under the agreement, as do Fox’s owned and operated television stations.
  • All local offerings from NBC, Telemundo and regional sports networks, as well as Bravo, CNBC, E!, NBCSN, Oxygen, Sprout, Syfy and USA Network, will be offered as part of a deal with NBCUniversal.
  • Scripps Networks Interactive will make content from HGTV, Food Network, Travel Channel, DIY Network and Cooking Channel available for streaming.
  • Viacom’s cable channels including BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Palladia, Spike and VH1 will be available on PlayStation Vue.
