Wondering how your format stacked up this year? Well, wonder no more. Manchester/Amsterdam-based media consultancy K7 Media has released its annual list of the top 100 traveling unscripted TV formats.
Topping the “Tracking the Giants” list this year is MBC/Fremantle’s The Masked Singer, with 22 format sales announced in 2019 and the promise of more to come. It was a good year for Fremantle, as the London-based distributor/producer boasts four titles in the top 15 best-selling formats of 2019.
And it’s a competitive market. As K7 Media CEO & founder, Keri Lewis Brown, observed: “The unscripted formats market is notoriously fast-paced; during 2019 we tracked almost 400 format deals across the industry, including 345 new licences.
“This year, we placed a greater focus on key elements that define unscripted formats exploring to what extent these impact their success.”
K7 Media worked with distributors to identify the trends that were driving the market, aiming to uncover what elements might lead to a successful format. The report shines a light on formats that continue to be evergreen, those that have created a buzz and others in decline.
When it comes to The Masked Singer, the K7 Media topper noted that the format embodies the current trend for “positive competition” and echoes the prevailing industry sentiment that the show, largely thanks to its out-of-the-gate success in America, has had the most noteworthy impact on the TV entertainment community since The Voice in 2010.
